Testing a manufacturer's product can range from precise analysis in the chemical laboratory to stress under severe conditions beyond any expected and normal use. Appliances may have to pass more than 100 tests to demonstrate compliance with standards recognized by government and industry. More than 100,000 tests have provided consumers with safer, more dependable appliances. This voluntary testing and certification program, established in 1925 by the American Gas Association, is marking its 50th anniversary this year and continues to serve the nation's consumers.
