July 6, 1885. Pasteur conquers the microbe. All his life, Louis Pasteur fights disease with his microscope. He saves France's wine industry by perfecting a technique for gentle heating of the liquids after fermentation called pasteurization. He rids France's silk industry of disease-bearing moths. He develops a vaccine against anthrax. But perhaps his greatest victory is his fight against hydrophobia. One day, a young boy is horribly bitten by a mad dog. The only thing that can save his life is Pasteur's anti-rabies serum. But will it work? Pasteur decides to risk injection. The boy recovers. Louis Pasteur completes his lifetime work, The Conquest of the Microbe.
