Notes: Not quite a PSA - I think this is local TV footage about the introduction of unleaded gas circa 1974. [Man 1] Cars burning our lead free gasoline have shown double the normal muffler, exhaust pipe and spark plug lives. The acids that rust and corrode mufflers and the deposits and foul spark plugs are produced by lead additives. These same ill effects of lead have damaged catalytic mufflers now being developed in our research on smog-free cars. Lead poisons the catalyst and fouls the emission controls. The availability of a lead free fuel means that catalytic mufflers will work efficiently at reducing the emission of carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and unburned hydrocarbons. It means in fact that the smog-free car can now become a technical reality. [Man 2] Doctor. Will this lead-free fuel itself help to eliminate air pollution? [Man 1] Hydrocarbon emissions will be reduced by about 20 percent. Lead particulates of course will be eliminated.
